2016 marks 20 years of the iconic Maleny Wood Expo From Chainsaw To Fine Furniture, held over three days in early May at the beautiful Maleny Showgrounds in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
Begun in 1996 to promote sustainable use of our beautiful native timbers through the work of local and regional wood artisans the Expo is now recognised as one of the best wood shows in Australia.
Maleny Wood Expo
30th April to 2nd May 2016
In line with this aim, all wood exhibitors are required to use sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers.
Wander at your leisure through lovingly crafted timber products and talk to the craftsmen and women who’ve created them – from furniture-makers and toy-makers, musical instrument-makers and box-makers, whittlers, carvers and everything in-between. There’s ‘something wood’ to suit every taste and budget.
View the 2016 Wootha Prize exhibition – themed “Against the Grain” in 2016 – where entrants vie for over $4,500 in prize money.
Glimpse the skills of the early timber-cutters who first opened up the Blackall Range, and see the best in both handcrafted traditional and high tech tools.
Smell the spicy aroma of newly milled timber and catch live demos of chainsaw carving, woodworking, trade tools and more.
There’s hands-on woodwork for the whole family with WoodShed Workshops and Woodwork for Women. Even kids can join in a Cool Stool Workshop or the Kids Space where kids can make and take home their own masterpiece. Visit www.malenywoodexpo.com for the full workshop program which will be available early March.
Plus there’s gourmet local produce to take home, native plants to encourage birds and wildlife to your garden, and displays showcasing environmental initiatives in the region to preserve our natural biodiversity.
And when you need a break, pull up a hay bale, enjoy great food and fabulous local music.
Have a great day among the sawdust!
