Justice Connect welcomes recently passed legislation that will facilitate the transfer of four unique deductible gift recipient (DGR) categories to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) from 1 January 2024. The categories presently administered by Ministers through departmental registers that will transfer to the ATO are the environmental organisations, harm prevention charities, cultural organisations, and overseas aid organisations categories. This change will simplify the administration of these four categories and, on the government’s own estimate, reduce the application processing time for DGR approvals from up to two years to around one month.

For years we have recommended that DGR endorsement be further simplified to reduce red tape for charities, including a submission ahead of these reforms. Find out more about how we believe the DGR system could be reimagined to support our charities better.
